The Polk Home is a true treasure. It is the only home with the one exception of the White House that is left where Polk resided. A must see for history buffs
Me and my brother went on a tour Sunday and the staff was very friendly to us. We were from out of town so it was nice to visit a local historic site, we had no idea of Polk's accomplishments! The tour was nice, it felt a little brief being apathetic but the guide seemed a little listless which is understandable in covid times for a tourist spot. The rest of the site made up for it though the upstairs was closed. It was a nice short stop, if you find yourself in the area sometime check it out!
My husband and I went on a tour January 31st, when we arrived they were just about to start a new tour. We decided to go on it instead of waiting 30 minutes for the next one, but we wish we waited. The guide was a little snarky towards us, whenever we asked a question she chuckled. It didn't seem very accommodating as it was a rather dry tour.nnWhen it was over we went back to the visitor center and watched an introductory video and went through the site's museum room. The video was very well done and it gave us a little more context that we wish we got before the tour.
Excellent tour guide filling in the praise and critique of the Polks' life, with numerous artifacts in the home owned by the 11th president (back then, presidents could keep gifts). You'll learn lots of trivia and more about the 1840s, including that while James Buchanan was weak president, he was an excellent Secretary of State for Polk.
Only gave four stars because we couldn't see the upstairs due to construction. The tour guide was excellent. He really knew the history and was able to answer any questions we had.
