I love getting to visit this historic site. It certainly worth a visit when in the area. It's one of the oldest houses around, as it predates the American Revolutionary War. The house originally belonged to Phillip Alston, but it was also occupied by Benjamin Williams, who was the governor of North Carolina four times. There are still bullet holes in the walls and above the bed from a skirmish that happened here during the time of the Revolutionary War. While not a direct battle in the Revolutionary War, it did take place during the War. It's a beautiful piece of history that has been wonderfully preserved.
enjoyed my trip to house in the horseshoe on this beautiful March day! the guide in the visitors center was welcoming and knowledgeable. the property is on gorgeous land and the house has been kept in great condition for its age!
Place of Revolutionary War battle, building still has bullet holes from the battle cant get more real than that. Most surprising is the view from property is excellent. Will be back when main house and museum are open
It is a nice piece of history, it didn't have bathrooms but it does have a wheelchair ramp to the house. Very interesting place to visit.
What amazing history I never knew existed. The story behind this home is amazing! Did you know the mother of the house hid her children in the chimney to protect them while the house was being fired at? Check out the musket holes around the front door!
