Iv been on navy ship museums all over the country and this one does things differently and I love it. Most museums cleans up and opens up the ship to make it safer and easier for guests to make their way through the ship. They kept things cramped and a little dangerous to truly show how our sailors and marines lived. It truly is a must see.
Ask to have Sam as your tour guide. She made the experience for our class so much better than we even anticipated. Thank you!nnCame back a year later with my family post-COVID and still enjoyed it. If you have a sound-sensitive child, bring headphones. The area with alarms and sirens is very disconcerting, even though it isn't that loud. Be aware also that there are many sets of very narrow stairs that are nearly 100% vertical. If you can't climb up and down, don't go on the ship tour. It's the only way through the tour.
As an army vet wife, my husband and I enjoyed this. You actually walk inside and downstairs of the ship. It's very hands on! If stairs are a struggle this may not be for you as you are going up and down some stairs during the self guided tour. But it is really cool to do since it's on the water.
The ship is awesome. Really gives you a feel for our men and women in the navy and coast guard. Great experience. Great photo ops. The museum is wonderful if you like history. Very nice staff.
If you're in Baton Rouge and a military or history nerd this is a place for you. You don't have full access to all the areas of the ship but you do get to see most of it. The guides on the ship are there just to answer questions and they are pretty good at it. This is a self-guided tour so you are allowed to wander around and take as long as you wish.
