My son loved it and the gentlemen there were very friendly and very knowledgeable
Amazing little depot museum with (3) operating model railroads in N, HO and O scales plus a multitude of artifacts and collectibles from both real and model railroading subjects. Outside they have a restored Pullman coach and Union Pacific cupola caboose on the grounds that you are permitted to explore inside during certain times of the year. On top of that they also have an enclosed trolley barn where you can view the restoration process of a vintage trolly!nThey’re easy to get to from all directions so go check them out!
We were driving back from Urbana and decided to check out Kankakee on the way home, and just stumbled upon this place. Fantastic model trains and displays. I could have easily looked at them for a long time, there were so many features and items to check out, including diverse miniature buildings, signs, people, lights, and other items that added to the complexity of the model towns. We also got a tour of the train cars and notable items. The volunteers there are knowledgeable and friendly. Great spontaneous experience, and they seem to really care about what they're doing there.
The jewel in the collection is the restored trolley car. There are also a couple of velocipedes - those carts that run on rails and a couple of workers push the see-saw-like handles up and down to make it go. Plus a World War 2 era Pullman car - not entirely restored but some interesting displays about the importance of railroads to the effort - and a caboose. Easy to find right at the Kankakee Amtrak station in downtown Kankakee just a few blocks from the French heritage museum (Kankakee County museum), Frank Lloyd Wright's first Prairie Style home (B. Harley Bradley house) and the Riverside historic district (self guided walking tour).
Staff very informative. The model trains were amazing, various gauges. The historical tour of the caboose and coach car was very educational. I was impressed by the knowledge of our tour guide about railroad history. History included street cars in Kankakee, Illinois railroads, and displays featuring WWII memorabilia. Too many things to be mentioned, but a fun learning experience!
