The entire experience was somber, yet also joyous. Listening to how the community has come together to preserve this important piece of history. Unlike many communities Sumner has chosen to confront their history head on, and in doing so have created something special.
Visit here and the courthouse. You'll learn a lot of great stuff.
Must visit. Somber but excellent presentation of facts and ambiance of the era. Docent was extremely knowledgeable. Hours look restricted, but when I called to confirm, he offered to stay open for my arrival. Also consider rounding out your stark Emmitt Till history with visit to the gin museum (excellent) and Money....
While I agree that racial injustice is wrong, and what happened to Emmett Till was a despicable crime, I can not go without saying how outrageous it is that the group running this facility would have the nerve to put up an apology page on their website. That they think I should need to apologize, or that anyone should have to today, is a disgusting misuse of the issue of racial equality. Crimes of the past are not the problem of the present, and if you seek to memorialize someone you shouldn't twist the event in question to fit a fictional narrative in a world that is unrecognizable when compared to the world in which the atrocious crime occurred.
