This museum is closed. It's listed as open here, but several cranky government employees on site let us know the public is not currently welcome. Hope they're able to resolve their personnel issues and reopen in the future.

Cool and educational place. I spent 30 minutes looking at the exhibits, and left with a little more knowledge than when I arrived. I especially enjoyed the boat models and the water lift station, which is completely original.

If you visit Chesapeake city this is a great place to see. I absolutely recommend.

Small yet FREE museum that addresses the history of the canal. Models are available for children of all ages to see how the canal works. Must stop while visiting Chesapeake City.

Looking for a short day trip? Well here's a good one. Snuggled in the middle of Chesapeake City Maryland is the C & D Canal House Museum. It's not a fancy place, but it's quiet where you can take a self guided tour and learn about the history of the canal, the area around the canal and the people. There are interactive models of the old canal locks as well as some actual equipment used along the canal. Afterwards you can walk the grounds and if you're lucky maybe even get to see a huge container ship go by. If you're into antiques there are local shops in nearby Chesapeake City.
