This is a very small museum overflowing with fascinating memorabilia, open very short hours at the moment, run by volunteers who usually have family connections to and extra tales about the displays. A very large part of the history depicted was the coal mines. The museum is across the street from the city park which is home to a memorial to the local coal miners. If you are one of the people driving across the country looking for the real America, Altus on US Hwy 64 is a great place to stop. It is the third city mentioned in Grapes of Wrath on the westward trip. Also home to several vineyards that offer tours of their winery and three nearby RV parks.
Lots of documentation about Altus and its history. Interesting display upstairs, but the stairs are steep. The hours are limited due to lack of sufficient volunteer staff.
Such a nice place with nice people. Definitely worth a stop.
