Tortuga surf school.

My boyfriend and I learned to surf with the instructors here at Tortuga Tortuga Surf Camp. You can stay at the base camp for a complete surfing/training experience. Or just take a few lessons if you’re in Jaco. They also arrange lessons and teach out of the hostel, Selina, down the road. We got to know the head instructor, Mike, and the manager, Celine, and you can truly tell that they LOVE what they do. We initially took 3 lessons but absolutely fell in love with surfing and extended our stay in Jaco to take more lessons with Mike. Him and his team make you feel like so comfortable and confident in the water. It was the BEST experience of our entire month in Costa Rica. We will be going back for a 3 week full surf camp soon.

Tortuga Surf Camp is the REAL DEAL. I started taking surfing more seriously about 2 years ago and before the camp I was at the stage where I was able to catch my own waves but had issues pumping, turning, generating power and staying in the wave. I stayed at different camps and had some guiding and lessons in Bali, Sri Lanka and India. However, I often was with instructors who didn't know how to coach, speak English well, were distracted by girls in the lessons or cared more about catching their own waves. A common issue with most surf instructors around. A friend recommended Tortuga if I was really serious about focusing on training so I decided to book in with Mike. Mike and his team are dedicated to their trade. They care about the progress and success of each student whether they are complete beginners or intermediate/advanced surfers. I spent two weeks at Tortuga Surf Camp. Each day we would surf 1-2x where I would always have a coach (mainly Mike) beside me directing and giving feedback on each wave, the conditions and how to improve. We reviewed video analysis from the drone and go pro footage and where I could make changes and improvement. We did Surf Skate (skateboard) drills in the street to help with pumping and turning. Now, I'm significantly more confident being at a busy line up with advanced surfers because I know my ability to read and catch waves has improved. This is the surf school you’re looking for! In a handful of lesson I went from zero surfing ever, to really confident on a board and standing up on 8/10 waves on my own for the rest of my stay in Costa Rica. These guys care about you, genuinely care about seeing you succeed, and want you to have a great time in Jaco. Even after our time was done in Jaco, they set us up with another instructor in our next location, because they wanted us to keep learning.

During our one month stay in Jaco we rented boards from Tortuga Surf School over ten times in addition to using their beach umbrellas. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The board rentals are $10 a day and surf lessons cost $50 for a 2 hr session. I’ve received surf lessons at many places around the globe and can say with confidence that Tortuga provides the best. The one-on-one guidance from their experienced instructors will have you surfing beyond the break in no time! They are also able to provide video feedback through the use of a drone which is very helpful for improving technique.
