Zöllnerhaus

Very beautiful passage in the Lübeck city center.

The Zöllnerhaus is a brick building of the Renaissance from 1571 in Lübeck, which belongs to the ensemble of the castle gate. The building with the location designation Große Burgstraße 5 adjoins the tower of the castle gate directly to the east and is connected to it on the inside. It is integrated into the Lübeck city fortification that continues to the east with the remains of the city wall preserved here. The garden belonging to the property is hidden between an open semicircular tower of the city wall and a street-side brick wall on Kaiserstrasse. The eaves house shows a three-tier gable on the eaves side of Grosse Burgstrasse, and a stepped gable is also formed on the east gable side. The Renaissance portal of the house with its round arch in brick is also on the eaves side. The facade is decorated with a terracotta frieze from the workshop of Statius von Düren, which alternately shows the Lübeck double-headed eagle and the Mecklenburg griffins. With the lifting of the gate, it became obsolete as a customs house. The increasing traffic through the castle gate in the 19th century made it necessary to set up additional passage gates for the castle gate, one of which was led through the ground floor of the customs house in 1875. On the fortified north side of the house there is a wooden bay window, the neo-Renaissance forms and carvings of which are based on motifs by the Marstall bay window to the west of the gate in Grosse Burgstrasse. The exterior of the building and its 18th century hallway are listed buildings.
