Narrenbrunnen am Kronenplatz

The fool fountain in Karlsruhe, which is dominated by a harlequin sculpture, only raises a limited claim to aesthetics. The figure of a Harlequin is usually a colorful and cheerful appearance, which immediately wins the sympathy of the hearts of the people. However, I miss the usual gracefulness of a harlequin in the fountain figure depicted. But is not the "fool freedom", which here also sets the "artistic freedom" aside? With this change of perspectives, the harlequin depicted does not seem to me to have missed its raw created figure. Carnival wants to caricature the happenings and the figures assigned to them, why should not this be possible with a Harlequin. The cartoon I interpret in this way has its justification. With folded legs, the harlequin sits on rock cubes, which in turn rest on a pedestal. The look of the harlequin looks set in the distance, as if he could see the happenings in the current year and thus determine the selection of Fasnachtsthemen for the next occasion. The round, blue terrazzo bowl with a diameter of six meters, which in turn rests on a round substructure, forms a moderate contrast, as it looks aesthetically perfect and gives the overall composition a vivid whole. Of course, the installation of 27 majolica tiles, which represent the emblems of all carnival clubs in Karlsruhe, as well as the coat of arms and two signs of the FKF, must also be mentioned. The water inlet into the well is cleverly placed with two nozzles in the base. The fountain, which was inaugurated on November 11, 1997 at 11:11, represents the old tradition of the carnival in Karlsruhe and may be perceived quite under this aspect.

I especially like the bathing pigeons. 🙂
