Fort Asterstein was built as the main work of the Pfaffendorfer Höhe system, as was the neighboring fortress Ehrenbreitstein in the new Prussian style. The period of construction of this building, located on the right bank of the Rhine, is between 1819 and 1826. The fort was named in 1847 in honor of the Prussian General Ernst Ludwig von Aster, who was, among others, the inspector of Prussian cities. from the Rhineland during the construction of the Koblenz Fortress had gained merit. The fort was first occupied by troops in 1830. The following engineer officers were involved in the construction of the fort in the construction phase until around 1823: Johann Heinrich Koeppe (n) (* ca. 1789, † 25 November 1873), came to the Prussian engineering corps as a geographer in 1815, 1820-1823 at Koblenz, the most recent chief engineer and field engineer in Schweidnitz, retired in 1848 as a lieutenant-colonel. Friedrich Wilhelm von Kummer (* circa 1794 in Berlin, † 6 May 1824 in Danzig), 1814 second lieutenant in the engineering corps, 1818-1820 in Koblenz, the most recent captain. From 1941 the cut was used to produce a newspaper (until 1945 the National Socialist Gazette and 1945-1951 Rhein-Zeitung). After that, the fort was inhabited by Koblenz families until 1971 and was finally allowed to decay in the following years, after the interior stairs and wooden ceilings were destroyed to prevent illegal relocation. When a cemetery was built in the immediate vicinity, the remains of the outer wall were leveled. Between 1996 and 2011, an association took care of the maintenance and restoration of the installation. The vaults were pressed in 2010.

Great place to chill out ... not quite as busy as the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
