No Christmas market this year, but still nicely lit .....

Big pillar in the market place. From there you can quickly walk into the cathedral and around it. It is very nice. Of course not as spectacular as the cathedral itself, but good to see.

In the middle of Mainz, on the market square, in front of the cathedral, stands the "Heunensäule" It is one of the landmarks of the city of Mainz. This approximately 1000 year old sandstone monolith, should weigh 16 tons, is about 6 meters high and has a diameter of 1.20 meters. For me, as a viewer, it's just a stone pillar, for Mainz, it's probably something special ... Much more interesting is the bronze substructure that has been artfully installed around the entire Heunensäule ... the artist and The sculptor Gernot Rumpf made this special feature ... Headgear can be seen on the four corners of the bronze sculpture: A helmet of a Roman legionnaire. A bishop's miter. A fool's cap. An imperial crown. Everything worth seeing below the Heunensäule has been immortalized in bronze, vividly reflects the historical city history of Mains ... If you have this knowledge, you will see the high sandstone monolith with completely different eyes, because 1000 years ago this monolith could already be seen in Mainz, even if not in this place today, because the monument with the Heunensäule was only here in 1975 placed in this place ....

Visiting Heunensäule is one of the things to do in Mainz. It points to the center of the city, weighs 16 tons and is almost 7 meters high. Although it appears to be a strong monolith from the Roman period, it was built only in 1975 and was originally part of a 1000-year-old colonnade from Miltenberg am Rhein.
