Public Health Engineering Department was formed in the year 1927 to provide water supply and watershed facilities in the state. In the year 1946, it was renamed as the Autonomous Governance Engineering Department. In June 1975, this department was converted into Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam under the Uttar Pradesh Water Supply and Sewer System Act 1975 (Act No. 43, 1975). U.P. Jal Nigam came into existence on 18 June 1975. According to this act, the area of ​​work of the Jal Nigam is the whole of Uttar Pradesh (except the constituency).
