South Indian Bank was registered as a Private Limited Company under the Companies Act, 1913 and commenced business at Round South, Thrissur on 29-01-1929. The South Indian Bank Limited was formed by 44 entrepreneurs in Thrissur. He donated Rs 500 each to the initial paid-up capital of Rs 22,000 / -. Their main aim was to free the moneylenders from the excessive interest rates and to serve the business community of Thrissur. The bank received good support from the public. Initially, growth was slow but steady. The number of branches opening each year has witnessed its stability and popularity. [Citation needed] It was included in the Reserve Bank's Second Schedule as a Scheduled Bank on 07-08-1946. SBI is the first scheduled bank in the private sector in Kerala to be licensed from RBI on 17-06-1957 under Section 22 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
