The Barilla Source can be visited through the tourist route organized by the association that also manages the caves of Equi. It is advisable to always inquire first on the website about the visiting and opening hours on the website because unfortunately they are not always open and you run the risk of arriving and finding them closed. Comfortable shoes are a must for the route, gymnastics are fine but trekking shoes would be better.

The Barrila spring is placed in a slightly higher position than the nearby source of the Buca, which flows near the cave of the same name, near Equi Terme. During the summer, the spring dries up, but it can happen that for a day or even just several hours, it comes back to work even with relevant flow rates, although at Equi Terme it has not rained. The karst circuit that feeds the two springs (Buca and Barrila) is very wide and therefore thunderstorms occurred in other areas even 10 km away, they are able to feed it by flowing in the karst paths formed within the metamorphic complex of the Apuan Alps. The Fagli stream is fed in the almost complete totality by the two springs; in fact, just upstream of the highest source of the Barrila, the riverbed is dry, already a few hours after the end of a rain. During the summer, when the springs go dry and the surface feeds are no longer visible, the water flows continue underground and in any case a flow, even minimal, is always present at the level of the bridle.
