A splendid example of a place with traces of human presence for at least 50,000 years. The Tecchia is located in an elevated position with respect to the built-up area of Equi terme, reachable through a comfortable path inside the Park of the caves. It consists of two environments: the external shelter and the cave. Subject of study and excavation operations since 1911, it led to the discovery of about 600 specimens of cave bear as well as other species now extinct such as the lion and the cave leopard. Currently the subject of excavations by a group of Florentine archaeologists, it shows the potential of deposits even older than those found. As far as human traces are concerned, numerous objects have been found (tips, scrapers, splinters ...) used by Neanderthals until the Middle Ages. Inside there is a small display with two skull bears from the caves and numerous remains of animals and human tools. The visit is highly recommended.
