The Parco degli Ex Carbonai is located in the hamlet of Villa di Villa in Cordignano.
The working season of the Carbonai began in the spring and ended in late autumn. The charcoal burner operated in a territory defined with preliminary agreements and only in that site could he cut trees. He was frequently accompanied by his wife and children who often collaborated in the hard work during the busiest periods.
For the Carbonai the logistic base was represented by the hut. Built directly in the mountains, possibly close to water sources, it had to meet the operational and life needs of the craftsman or his family.
Next to the entrance door was the hearth and the furnishings were created directly on site by the charcoal burners who often worked the wood with skill.
The foods consumed were: polenta, cheese, potatoes and some legumes, eggs and fresh vegetables were rare.
Water was the main problem to be solved, in fact it was essential both for human needs and to extinguish any outbreaks of fire at the time of coal formation. In cases where the water was difficult to recover, strategies were adopted to accumulate rainwater.
The woman had, in the life of a charcoal burner, a fundamental role in fact she provided for domestic life, cooking, animal husbandry, the care of a small vegetable garden and in addition she helped in the critical phases of the preparation of coal.
The carbonization did not result from the combustion of the wood, but from its cooking, that is, from the evaporation of the water which gave rise to a whitish and dense smoke that was gradually blue, the process was completed when no more smoke came out of the wood.
Once cooled and cleaned, the coal was bagged and subsequently marketed in the towns and markets of the plains.
Since June 1983, a group of former Carbonai from Villa di Villa has built in the locality of La 'Mar, what was exactly the Carbonaio work camp.
Every year during the month of July the Festa dei Carbonai offers participants the opportunity to see and relive this ancient craft.
At the entrance to the Parco degli Ex Carbonai there is the possibility to recharge your electric bicycle in the special structure. There are also others along the Trevigiana Pedemontana.
I often go there by bicycle. It is a place of other times. The story indeed. Former Carbonai. To visit👍
recently renovated, it is also equipped with an EBike charging station and provides shelter in bad weather. It is not attended except for parties and has no drinking water available. The road x get there by car is not wide but you can get there by following the excellent paths that start from the valley or by bicycle x asphalt road
Well cared for in the middle of the woods on the road that leads from Villa di Villa to Cansiglio e-bke charging point in summer you are very well.
In memory of those who sweated to ... warm up
