The place feels rather sterile and empty but the food is phenomenal and the outdoor bath is fantastic.

Beautiful location, facilities were clean and spacious. The staff were friendly and polite. The private onsen was absolutely lovely. The food...so much food and all very fresh and presented beautifully. I have never eaten so much in my life. That's an experience on its own. I would recommend this ryokan to others

This ryokan with onsen in the mountains of Hakone was a treat to visit. While the building did show its age in some places and even with the sounds from the nearby local train line (that conveniently brought me to the area), it still managed to be an overall positive experience. The dozen course meals were impressive, the hot springs were relaxing, and the area was breathtakingly beautiful and overflowing with greenery. On a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji from your window. For Westerners, I recommend bringing your own pillow and be prepared for a firm futon experience. Overall, a great idea for a weekend getaway and change of pace from the hustle and bustle of Japanese city life.

The highlights are the great private bath, though note you only get 30 minutes, the kaiseki meal which was good but not amazing for the price. The overall serenity of the hotel is a big plus. The facilities do feel dated at this point and the staff barely speak any English. Ladies get a yukata of their choice in addition to the room yukata, bath and sleeping. Staff are attentive but the language barrier makes things hard. Note that the hotel does not hold your luggage, so if you plan to tour Hakone the day after you need to rely on other luggage storage facilities, or just forward your luggage to your next destination the day before.
