Chūzen-ji Temple

The temple is in a beautiful location. It is home to an amazing Buddhist statue, which was carved out by Shodo Shounin out of one tree wirhout actually cutting the tree down. So even now after so many years the statue has its root intact while it is being exhibited and venerated on the temple's hall!

On my first trip to Japan in December, 1976, my father-in-law took me to the Chusen-ji Temple as part of a day-long excursion from Tokyo to Nikko and its various sights. Of course, we went to the Tosho-gun Shrine, and to the waterfall at the mouth of the lake.

Beautiful place all year long
