I'm giving it 5, not because it was luxury but because it was such a great example of what is unique in Japan. The wood, architectural designs, fixtures, lobby, patio on the roof, baths inside and out on the top floor, and front entrance to relax are what really makes this plane shine. Ceilings are high with doorways low. Sleeping space very good. Toilets and bathrooms were fine. Definitely would stay here again.

If you love a classic traditional Japanese hotel like I do, this hotel is right for you. For the rate I got, their is spacious and nice. It includes complimentary Japanese breakfast, which was not bad. Everything is old-school, but very clean. The hotel is quite a walking distance from Ueno, but it's worth my walk.

Great hotel experience of you’re looking for a ryokan that’s not too pricey. Rooms were spacious despite having 3 girls and tons of luggage. The futons were so comfortable, I didn’t feel like I was sleeping on the floor. I absolutely loved the public bath and looked forward to it every night we came back from sightseeing. Staff is friendly and speaks English to help with your accommodations. The only downside is that it’s located on a hill, so be careful if you’re carrying a lot of luggage

Just about perfect if you don't mind a bit of wear and tear and genuine 60s retro ambience and facilities. Very pleasant staff, fine service; they gracefully accepted a collect courier delivery in advance of our arrival (a life-saver!). Surprising and unexpected amenities: a large upper floor given over to onsen baths (indoor and outside), lockers, recreation room, roof deck. Traditional tatami mat rooms, large size and fully equipped. Breakfast ample and okay. Quiet, calm, reasonably close to transit hubs.

A nice traditional hotel in central Tokyo at a very reasonable price, and with an outdoor onsen !
