The building is pretty old but we'll maintained thanks to the hard work of the foreigner staff. Food, we had dinner and breakfast, is great as well. This is a guest house so don't expect a three stars hotel. It's a great location for backpack travellers while it could be a bit too rough for families with kids due to strict rules (silence after 21:00). Overall we had a good experience over there.

If you are visitors to Japan, you may love this place; the old town load preserved since 17th(?) century will pull your attention. I am Japanese, but I didn't know the beauty of this place since my foreigner friend told me to visit with me.

Loved this place so much!! Just everything about the place, the town, the hosts, the food, the surrounding mountains and green landscapes. So much all rolled into one, I can’t remember a better place so full of beautiful things... nope not one. This takes the cake for sure- or the tempura at least. Check it out 👍🏻

We stayed one night in Magome Chaya. The room is pretty basic (you have to install your bed yourself, and when they are installed they take all the space in the room). The bathrooms are shared. We payed around 85€ without breakfast or dinner for one nigh; it seems expensive regarding the infrastructure but I think that it is because of the location of Magome and the fact that there are only a few hotels there. But everything was very clean and the owners were very nice. It is also very pleasant to see the village without all the tourist at the end of the afternoon. The main issue was the lack of insonorisation between the rooms, I slept very badly because our neighbors left very very early in the morning. The arrival and departure times are quite unusual but didn't bother us. We took both the diner and breakfast there (around 35€ for dinner and 10€ for breakfast per person) and it was really really good: best tempura I had! Really recommend to eat there, the food is home-cooked and very very good!

Although the pictures and name make it sound like a charming little inn, albeit a bit rustic, it is actually closer to a hostel filled with noisy tourists and very thin walls. There is one young woman who seems to run everything and she's pleasant and helpful. But there's only so much she can do to get people to be respectful and mindful of other guests. For the price in the heart of Magome, you get what you get.
