Traditional beautiful Shinto shrine. We came on a Sunday afternoon, and there was a 25 min monkey performance in front of the shrine. Not sure how humanely the monkey is trained, but the trainer appeared to be taking very good care of him and he seemed happy. Apparently they have been performing together for 8 years. The monkey was on a rope, but the rope was loose at all times and was attached to a harness, not a collar. Super impressive performance!

Interesting experience with drawing fortune slips and purifying with the smoke! Enjoyed the time here as you can see some traditions inside the city. Despite long history of the shrine, the building was shining and beautiful. Strongly recommend to visit in the evening as you can see a great picture of the shrine with sunset. You are able to try local snacks from the booths outside!

Well worth hiring a local guide for as this is a large (but easily walked) complex containing countless idiosyncrasies that are better brought to life by a guide - no guidebook could ever do justice to the fascinating connections between the things you are seeing, their place in the history of the country and the resonance that they have with the people who live, and who have lived, there. Buildings and artifacts ranging from thought provoking to downright mind bending abound and they are all easily accessible.
