The Sumida Hokusai Museum

An amazing museum dedicated to one of the greatest Japanese artist. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece. Powerful yet simple.

It's easy to go there from subway station, it takes just around 5 minutes. You may be surprised that the building is so small in contrast to Hokusai's big name. It's bit difficult to find its entrance because the building shape and design is disgusting. You can enjoy Hokusai's master pieces as much as you want. They have a small but nice souvenir shop on the ground level. You can see and buy various types of books which are written in Japanese or English, stationary goods, post cards, and many other attractive stuff without buying entrance ticket. There is no cafeteria in the museum. If you want to have a break while you see master pieces of Hokusai, you can ask staff that you are going to have a coffee outside. Don't forget to ask where are good restaurants near the museum. It may be difficult to find proper place around there.

Tiny museum, but well curated and worth a visit.

I have only seen the permanent exhibition. I found it sober, well documented and well presented. A detailed explanation in both Japanese and English accompanied each exhibit. There were a few interactive exhibits that helped me engage more actively with the art. We were informed that other momentary exhibitions are usually available - for a separate fee. I found the building a nice piece of architecture too.
