My husband and I had a very peaceful, relaxing evening here together. The food was outstanding. Enjoyed spending meals with other couples from around the world. It was a great way to relax before heading to Tokyo the next day! Also, the showers were incredible!

The whole place seems to be managed by a nice older lady who only speaks Japanese. We managed to communicate with hand gestures and smiles. It was a nice experience, sleeping in a traditional Japanese-style village home, and being served local food. You can only use the sole shared bathroom at certain hours. There seems to be only about 4 rooms in the house, and you have to have your meals at specific times set by the owner, together with the other house guests, in a common dining area (you'll need to sit on the floor). Shoes are left at the "lobby", and you'll need to wear their provided Japanese slippers/sandals.

First of all, if you are considering visiting Shirakawa-go or not: DO VISIT. Second, DO stay at a gassho-sukuri if your budget allows (do consider the fact that you get a very complete, high-quality dinner and breakfast, and that many people pay 300Y/p to enter other gassho-houses which makes no sense to pay since you are staying at one). My only "complaint" is that I expected it to be a family house and interact with the owners as part of the experience: this was not the case (we didn't interact with anyone more that for check-in/out and being served meals). I was never promised otherwise so no points lost for this, but wanted to share it to explain the experience for future travelers.
