The synagogue has been renovated, thanks to the pictures you can see how it looked just a few years ago. This synagogue in Cieszanów is the last of three. Not far away there is a church and church which shows how Cieszyn was multi-cultural.
Until recently, the synagogue was completely devastated. During World War II, the Germans removed the metal sheet from the roof and created a ghetto around the synagogue itself. After the war, the building served as a warehouse. The lack of ongoing maintenance meant that in the 1960s it was not suitable for further use. From the mid-90s, the building stood abandoned and destroyed in a state of closed ruin. In 2015, he was saved by a major renovation. Currently, there is a thriving Elderly Day Care Home. Inside you can see small fragments of the original walls left behind.
Former synagogue converted into a common room for seniors. Very nicely renovated and original paintings and inscriptions on the walls have been preserved. The building says a lot about the Jewish population of that time and it is very good that it was developed rather than demolished or neglected. I recommend visiting.
The ruins of the synagogue in Cieszan are located at 7 Skorupki Street, near the western frontage of the square and the closed church. The first information about the synagogue in Cieszanów comes from 1629, but it is uncertain whether it survived the invasions of Khmelnytsky's army in 1649 or it was demolished or dismantled and a new one was erected here.
The one we look at today was created in 1889. Bricked on a square plan and maintained in an eclectic style. During World War II, it was devastated by the Germans who created a ghetto around it. After the war, it served as a warehouse and is currently being renovated.
The synagogue is undergoing repair, or rather, restoration. I wish the faithful, the inhabitants and the guests of the city a speedy and pleasant opening of the renovated ancient synagogue!
