In 1830-1831, Russia suffered a severe cholera epidemic. The inhabitants of the town of Korotoyak were seized with fear. At this time, the Mother of God appeared to Ekaterina Ilarionova (Kolomenskaya) in a dream and ordered to take her icon from the Divnogorsk monastery: "Pray before her, and if you do not take it, then you will all die." In the morning, the woman came to the Korotoyak Cathedral, where there were already a lot of people who had gathered to pray for deliverance from the epidemic. Kolomenskaya told about her dream. At the same time, people remembered about repeated visions of light and rays at night in the church of the Divnogorsk courtyard. Therefore, Kolomenskaya's story was greeted with confidence. Having asked permission from the pastors, the people, together with Kolomenskaya, went to the Divnogorsk monastery for the icon (July 1831). But the icon that Kolomenskaya had seen in a dream was not in the monastery. Despite this, Kolomenskaya continued to ask to find the icon and give it to her. The abbot, Hieromonk Athanasius, summoning all those who were in the monastery, began to ask about the requested icon. The monastic laborer Andrei, a man of a righteous life, who from Korotoyak (when the monastery was there) often wandered to Divnogorye with its caves, said that he saw an ancient icon on a pillar in Big Divas. Kolomenskaya went to Divas and from a distance, seeing the icon, admitted that she had seen exactly such an image in a dream. But it was impossible to remove the icon without a ladder, since it was cut high in the pillar. One of the newcomers began to crawl up the next slope, to which the pillar adjoins, and easily removed the icon. The dreamer, and after her, all those who came, seeing the icon, as if miraculously descended from the mountain, went, carrying the miraculous image, first to the monastery, and then to Korotoyak to the monastery compound. The placing of the icon in the church was accompanied by a prayer with an akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, and then all-night vigil. The next day, after the liturgy and prayer service with the consecration of water, a procession with the icon of the Mother of God of Sicily began from the city square. After that, the disease began to recede. Meanwhile, the townspeople were in a hurry to take the icon to their homes to perform prayers to the Mother of God before it. Soon, the disease stopped altogether. After that, the inhabitants of Korotoyak decided to take this icon to themselves every year - in the days when the first miracle of healing and deliverance of the city of Korotoyak from the epidemic was discovered. In 1847-1848. Russia again suffered a cholera epidemic. The shortworm was not injured. But neighboring Ostrogozhsk was seized by this disaster. The inhabitants of the city resorted to the intercession of the Mother of God and asked for the Sicilian Icon of the Intercessor from the Divnogorsk builder, Hieromonk Mercury. On August 29, 1847, they brought it to their city for the first time. And again the disease began to subside. Grateful townspeople in 1848 asked the Voronezh Archbishop Ignatius to allow them to annually bring an icon to the city for prayers from August 29. The Right Reverend Ignatius allowed to receive the icon in Ostrogozhsk only for three days (from June 28 to July 1). But the residents of Ostrogozhsk again asked to grant their previous petition, “considering it possible, especially since the citizens of the neighboring town of Korotoyak have long enjoyed the right to annually take her to their city from July 1 to August 14, and the Divnogorsk Monastery, being in the dachas of the Ostrogozhsky district, in the concept of a hostel is our common belonging "(P. Nikolsky" Divnogorsk Assumption Monastery. Historical sketch ". Voronezh, 1904). This time they asked that the miraculous Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God remain in Ostrogozhsk from August 29 to October 25, so that every resident of the city could, by diligence, pray in front of the icon in his own home, and even the district residents could pray here, which at many could not do the remoteness from the monastery. One of the consequences of this order of affairs would be an increase in funds for the renewal of the Divnogorsk monastery. Archbishop Ignatius, after this petition, considered it necessary to submit a presentation to the Holy Synod. The Holy Synod, according to His Grace Ignatius, on September 2, 1850, decided to allow the citizens of Ostrogozhsk to bring the Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God to their city for a period of two
The place is interesting, I definitely recommend to visit. Although the main icon is not the same from the 11th century, it does not spoil the feeling and perception in general. The history of the monastery itself is very interesting, you can always talk to the governor, he is a very open and interesting person.
The caves temple is under restoration. At the beginning. It looks sad so far.
Divnogorie is a place for those who love nature, who are tired of the city bustle. These are chalk mountains, cave temples, a miraculous icon of the Sicilian mother of God. You need to visit in the summer, preferably at the beginning of summer, when the vegetation is green - green, because in August you will see yellow grass. In the summer from Voronezh on Saturdays there is a special excursion train with all the amenities that will take you to Divnogorye in 2.5 hours
In this train, time will fly by completely imperceptibly, and even want to drive more, it is so comfortable to ride in it. Those who by car can immediately visit Divnogorie and the Holy Dormition Monastery, where they will see really operating churches in the chalk caves. The icon of the Sicilian Mother of God is located in Divnogorie. It is healing, I went with pain, but after visiting the icon, the pain passed. In general, in the summer this is a wonderful place where you want to return.
The place is reserved. Not everyone will be able to walk 400 steps and many kilometers along the path to admire the chalk mountains, cells in the rock. And in the end, get to the amazing beauty of the monastery settlement, to the temple, defend the service and receive the blessing of the priest.
