Impressive and monumental building of neo Gothic architecture! Walls are from the six lines of red brick! Roof is absent unfortunately... This Catholic Church of Saint Mary was built in 1906-1907 in former German colony Bahr (Ber). This crown German colony was founded by 42 families from Mainz, Wurzburg, East Prussia and Poland on July 6(17), 1765 on the left bank of the Ilovli River. Here was one of the first Catholic parishes of the Volga region, the center of the deanery
The town of Kamenka was founded on 6 July 1765 by colonists from several regions of the Great Roman Empire (those regions now belongs to Germany) who had been recruited by officials of Catherine the Great's government and was therefore known as a Crown Colony.
For some time in the early years, the colony was also called Bähr in honor of Samuel Bähr, one of the first mayors (Vorstehers) of the colony.
This Catholic church of Saint Mary was built in 1906-1907. Reflecting the influence of neogothic architecture, the red brick house of worship included a choir loft and an organ. Murals painted on the walls were said to have been the work of Italian craftsmen. The church was gutted during the Stalinist era. The carved oak door and ornate railings were removed and it was converted into a warehouse and tractor garage. Today unfortunately only ruins remain as a symbol of an era, where the colonies of the German Republik of the Volga once flourished.
Very atmospheric! True, the village looks more like a horror movie, a tractor was driving along the road, and a woman in red was walking towards. And that's all. We did not meet more people ...
Once an impressive structure, now it is dilapidated, the preservation must be admitted not bad in comparison with similar ones in the area. Given the relative availability of the ruins, this is encouraging
Monumental beautiful building. Still alive
