Beautiful promenade with amazing views of the Volga. By order of the former City Council, People's Artist of the RSFSR Y. Chernov created such a monument, and in 1990 it was cast in bronze at the Mytishchi art casting plant. For three years, the sculpture was lying there, as the city did not have money to buy it back. The factory even wanted to sell this statue to someone. Finally, there was money. They brought a monument to Saratov, determined a good place for him on the Cosmonauts Embankment, made the foundation and put the sculpture on a pedestal ... Monument Yu.A. Gagarin did not like many people: he didn’t look like him, his head was big, he didn’t correspond to his height, etc. Sculptor Yu. Chernov does not agree with this, he sees the astronaut like this. Perhaps the artist has the right to his vision ... The place for the monument was chosen successfully! Yuri Gagarin is walking along the Quay of astronauts, all directed toward the distance, all in the future. Great composition! On September 30, 1995, the city decided to officially open the monument to the pioneer of space. Many guests came: Yu.L. Chernov - author of the monument, V.V. Kovalenok - cosmonaut, twice a hero of the Soviet Union, head of the Air Force Engineering Academy. prof. NOT. Zhukovsky, B.V. Gromov - Colonel General, Deputy of the State Duma, etc. Filatova - niece of Yu.A. Gagarina, director of the memorial museum of Yu.A. Gagarin in his homeland, and others.

The square with the monument to the first cosmonaut of the planet is a reminder that Saratov - Engels - Gagarin places. Here, from 1951 to 1955, Yura studied at the industrial technical school as a master in foundry. Here, together with his fellow students, he cast decorative gratings for the fence, some of which were preserved in the public garden of the Saratov Drama Theater named after I.A. Elephant. Studying at the technical school, which is now called "The Saratov State Vocational Pedagogical College named after Yury Gagarin," in 1954-1955, he mastered flying skills at a flying club near the city of Engels. And a year before the flight into space he improved parachute jumps as part of the first cosmonaut corps. And finally, on April 12, 1961, it landed on the left bank of the Volga, near the village of Smelovka, Engels District. About 15 years ago with friends I had a chance to visit Yuri Alekseevich’s ejection space capsule.

Gagarin Square is part of the Cosmonauts Embankment, at the intersection with Obukhovsky Lane. In September 1995, a monument to Yuri Gagarin, the first cosmonaut of the planet, was unveiled on the square, by the sculptor - People's Artist of the RSFSR Y. L. Chernov. The square offers a view of the embankment, the Volga river and the bridge connecting two cities, Saratov and Engels.
