The stone cathedral was built in 1507-1509. In the mid 1660s, a staircase on creeping arches was added to the cathedral. In 1793-1796, according to the project of architect M. Ya. Agafonov, a bell tower was built in the style of classicism. A little earlier, in 1790-1791, the coating was replaced with a pitched roof, and the stone drums with wooden ones. In the years 1823-1825. on the site of the original northern gallery, the Pokrovsky chapel was built in the pseudo-Gothic style, designed by F. M. Shestakov in 1822. In 1841, a similar chapel was built on the south side. Then at the corners 4 more wide wooden drums with domes appeared, giving the whole cathedral a pyramidal composition. After the revolution, the cathedral functioned for a long time, but in 1932 it was closed and transferred to the museum. In the mid-1930s, crosses were removed from its domes, and in August 1941 the upper part of the bell tower was demolished. In 1961-1965, restoration was carried out, the bell tower was restored, but the corner drums were removed. In 2001-2003, after a new restoration, the side domes were restored. In 2002 the museum was transferred to a new building, the church was completely transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church and consecrated on July 23, 2003.
