The Granite Palace is the former headquarters of the Hackman & Co firm in Vyborg, built in 1907–1908 by the architects Uno Ulberg and Axel Gülden in the Northern Art Nouveau style. The founder of the company in 1790 was the German merchant of the Hanseatic League Johann Frederik Hackmann, who came to Vyborg from Bremen. The firm was engaged in trade in timber, sugar, coffee, salt, etc. The Hackmans became the founders of the Vyborg shipyard. Representatives of this family not only developed the city's economy by opening enterprises and banks, but also were the founders and trustees of the society of sisters of mercy "Dyakonissilaitos", contributed to the development of sciences (archeology) and sports in Vyborg, served as consuls of foreign states, and contributed to the development of the transport network Vyborg. Hackman's house combined administrative and residential functions, a trading floor, utility buildings, warehouses and garages. Facade decoration includes stone carving with images of birds and animals, as well as floral ornaments. The high aesthetic level of the luxurious interiors with built-in furniture, chandeliers in the form of medieval candlesticks and decorative design also attracted attention. During the Soviet-Finnish wars of 1939-1944, the roof and some of the paintings were damaged. What the war could not take was destroyed by the devilry of the Soviet hard times. The interiors were completely destroyed, the premises were disfigured by redevelopments and dismantling. For two decades, most of the premises have been empty, the future of this amazing building is densely enveloped in a fog of uncertainty.

The original building is always nice to see ...

A peculiar building, noticeable from afar. Almost all buildings in Vyborg need preening.

Very atmospheric house, fits perfectly into the architecture of the old city!

The house is beautiful, but the broken streets and facades of other buildings look sad
