Just a debris

At the end of the 18th century, the Ptichnik was erected in the Palace Park on the site of a stockyard - a picturesque building designed by the famous architect Andrey Zakharov (author of the St. Petersburg Admiralty). It was intended for keeping pheasants and other birds for the imperial hunting. Due to the death of Paul I, the construction was not completed: they did not have time to arrange some decorative elements - vases and decorations in the form of birds. But what they did looks very convincing. The U-shaped building with a two-storey central part and low side wings is framed by small round towers. The main facade on the Kolpanka side is decorated with arched portal windows, and the cornice above the portico is a spacious balcony. Like many structures in the Palace Park, the pavilion was rebuilt from Paritsky, Chernovsky and Pudost limestone mined in nearby quarries. Unfortunately, the "Birdhouse", which survived the Great Patriotic War, was seriously damaged by a fire in 1983. Today you can see only the destroyed walls, which, nevertheless, have retained their original beauty.
