Sil'viyskiye Vorota

In 1792, at the request of Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, it was decided to turn part of the forest in the north-west into a park, which was named "Sylvia". Unlike the landscape garden, this garden had a regular layout, was separated from the Palace garden by a stone fence, and it was possible to enter it through the Silvian gate, built in 1792-1793 under the leadership of Kiryan Plastinin. The most expressive detail in the classical architecture of the gate is the keystone, which is decorated in the form of a “bearded giant” mask. The difference between the Sylvian gates is that they attract not by their scale and monumentality, like the Admiralty and Birch, but rather by their mystery and poetry. The gates serve as a kind of invitation for guests to the romantic landscape "Sylvia".

Built in 1792 - 1793, they lead to the Sylvia Park. The most expressive detail in the classical architecture of the gate is the keystone in the form of the spirit - the patron of the forest park. The Gatchina forest spirit Sylvan is one of the inimitable works of decorative sculpture. The expression on this mysterious forest dweller's face is detached and focused. The fixed gaze looks as if through time and space.
