Interesting is the fate of the lion, who miraculously survived all the troubled times. During World War II, the fascists sent the sculpture to Riga, but the factory workers hid it and kept it until the arrival of the Soviet Army. After the war, the bronze lion was taken to Leningrad, and a little later it was re-installed on its native pedestal. Many do not realize, but it is not only a monument but also the grave of Karl Ivanovich Bistrom - a Russian military leader, a hero of the Patriotic War of 1812. Bistrom died in 1838 in Bavaria, where he was treated. The body was transported and buried in his estate Romanovka. With the funds raised by the officers, the sculptor P. Klodt ordered the Bronze Lion monument on a granite pedestal. Next to the grave, the officers built a chapel (not preserved) and an invalid home for veteran soldiers called to guard the commander’s grave (now a ski lodge).

Karl Ivanovich Bistrom is a distant relative of Pushkin's mother. Pushkin himself once visited these places. Bistrom investigated his last duel.
