Cool building

The building was built by Tom de Thomon in the 19th century. In place of the previous Exchange, built under Catherine 2 by Giacomo Quarenghi. The building was built precisely on the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island, since in the 18th century there was a port. The goods were unloaded and placed in warehouses (on the left and right of the Exchange there are two identical buildings. In one of them is the Zoological Museum in the other, and the Institute of Soil Science). But goods were being sold at the Exchange. Nearby, the building of the customs house of Pushkin House (Institute of Russian Culture) was erected. In order for the architectural ensemble on Strelka V.O. to take place, a semicircular Exchange Square was artificially poured and, as the dominants, two symmetrically located in relation to the Exchange building, the Rostral Columns are lighthouses. Poseidon sits on the building, surrounded by newts with cornucopia in their hands. The building was built in the era of classicism, and was intended to become a replica of the Parthenon in Greece. This is the Russian Parthenon. In Soviet times, the building housed the Naval Museum. Interesting. With rare artifacts, for example, there was a boat of Peter the Great- "the grandfather of the Russian fleet." This is the ship on which Peter learned to sail. In 2010, I visited the museum on the eve of closing. The building was planned to be put up for major repairs. And the museum itself was transferred to a new building on Labor Square (Blagoveshchenskaya). I drew attention to the numerous leaks and poor condition of the premises. For many years, the building has been under repair, the repair budget has gradually grown, as new problems with the construction have opened up. The plans are that the building will go to the State Hermitage and the numismatic department of the famous museum will be opened there. Here, we should expect the grand opening of the new Hermitage branch in the Exchange building on Strelka V.O. January 2020
