Kostyrevskaya (Red) tower, which had a multifaceted shape. It was dismantled in 1833 due to dilapidation, and in 1834, by order of the governor N.I. Khmelnitsky, a new one was constructed, which in a constructive way is very different from the original towers of the Smolensk fortress. Its construction cost 200 thousand rubles - the amount for that time is huge. Regarding this tower, Nicholas I uttered the famous phrase addressed to the heir: “Well, brother Sasha, it seems that only in Russia we are not the only ones who steal from you.” Relatively recently there was a tavern, now the building is run by the Gorvodokanal.

The tower from the Dnieper side looks just gorgeous. Of course in its original form it was not preserved and was built in the Х1Х-th century. The names have a lot of different, different: Powder and Red ... even the name, Kostyrevskaya, in time included other vowel letters. It's unique!
