Dolgochevskaya Bashnya

Dolgochevskaya may have received the name from the ancient word "long", i.e. "Long, tall." In addition, we still have other names for this tower: for example, "Shembelevka" - by the name of one of the defenders of the city. In 1706, by order of Peter the Great, preparing to confront the troops of the Swedish king Charles XII, the tower was additionally protected by an earthen embankment from the outside. A moat has also been preserved here. Relatively recently, the Dolgochevskaya tower was covered by a high wooden hipped roof. Inside, like many towers, there is empty space, no overlap.

One of the most picturesque views of the Smolensk fortress, unfortunately, is still closed to tourists to this day (hello to the indifference of Medinsky and local princes). Those who know the path can climb 😉

Dolgochevskaya or Shembelyov hexagonal tower of the fortress looks very significant and monumental. As a tourist - a loner from St. Petersburg would not like to come across it in a beauty salon or solarium with a fitness club so convenient for the commercial development of modern Smolensk!? ... As it should be on the outside of the wall wasteland - a place for walking dogs and other worldly pleasures of Smolyan, ... the same way the view of the city's new buildings is picturesque at this time of the year.

The fortress wall of Smolensk, of course, is impressive. It is good that, despite everything that the city experienced, large fragments managed to be preserved. But the state in many places on closer inspection is sad.
