Bashnya Zimbulka

The small quadrangular Zimbulka tower is connected by the wall chambers with the Nikolsky Gate and the 16-faced Dolgochevsky tower. Perhaps the tower got its name from the nickname "Zimbul" - one of the residents of the Vyazemsky district. In 1706, by order of Peter I, the tower was, among others, protected by a moat and an earthen mound. The frequent visits of Peter I to Smolensk at the beginning of the 18th century were connected with the war against Sweden. The fortifications in Smolensk were to block the way for the troops of the Swedish king Charles XII, who boasted "to pass through Smolensk, take possession of Moscow and give its generals a dining table in it." Like many towers, it arrives in desolation. Relatively recently, to the anniversary of the city, the Zimbulka tower is covered with a wooden roof. There are no overlappings inside, the entrance to it is open from the inside of the fortress

Cute, small, miniature, quadrangular, surviving tower of the Smolensk fortress in the center of the present city. The kind and the name is truly Slavic archaic ... At Zimbulka I penetrated to the outside of the wall through the hand-made window from Marshal Zhukov Street ... Only when a middle-aged bearded brook came out of it did I see this passage. Apart from the fact that the ceilings were not made at historical marks, the tower is simply wonderful. It’s a pity that only the little one is very, one and a half times smaller than the miserable Voronin tower, I am silent about Dolgochevskaya. They say there is a second staircase, deep in the masonry walls, but I do not believe it.
