In order to perpetuate the memory of N.G. Chernyshevsky, the Central Executive Committee of the USSR, by a resolution of April 4, 1936, decided to propose to the Leningrad City Council to provide for the construction of a monument to the Russian enlightener-revolutionary in terms of city reconstruction. The All-Union competition for the best design of the monument was announced by the Department of Arts in cooperation with the Leningrad Union of Soviet Architects in the fall of 1938, for which 22 projects were submitted. In 1940, in accordance with the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR "On the perpetuation of the memory of N. G. Chernyshevsky," the results of the competition were summed up, and the first prize was awarded to a project by sculptor V. V. Lishev and architect V. I. Yakovlev. The bronze sculpture was cast in the spring of 1941 at the Monumentskulptura plant. Around the same time, a foundation pit began to be dug at the site of the monument, and granite blocks for the pedestal were brought. The sculptor Lishev was awarded the Stalin Prize of the 2nd degree for 1941 for the monument to N.G. Chernyshevsky. The outbreak of the Great Patriotic War prevented the installation of the monument. Granite for the pedestal was used in the construction of bunkers. The decision to resume work on the installation of the monument was made in June 1945. Granite was prepared anew. Four floor lamps and letters of the inscription were cast at the Monumentskulptura plant. The installation of the sculpture was entrusted to "Stalkonstruktsiya", the marble cladding of the foundation of the monument - to the students of the vocational school of architecture. The grand opening of the monument took place on February 2, 1947. In 1948, the square on Moskovsky Prospekt, where the monument was erected, received the name of Chernyshevsky. The sculptor depicted Chernyshevsky sitting. A coat is thrown over the writer's right shoulder, and a half-closed book is in his left hand. Chernyshevsky seemed to have looked up from his reading and looked thoughtfully ahead. On a rectangular stepped pedestal made of pink unpolished Gangutsky granite, the inscription is made in overlaid bronze letters: “N. G. Chernyshevsky / 1828-1889 ". The pedestal rests on a three-step granite stylobate. The height of the sculpture is 3.8 m, the height of the pedestal is 2.25 m.

There are tiles all around, but here is excellent asphalt. Wonderful place for a beginner to ride a skateboard. Well, Chernyshevsky is good, in contrast to modern monuments that raise questions.
