Stela "Gorod Voinskoy Slavy" Tuapse

The period of the Great Patriotic War is one of the most heroic in the history of the city of Tuapse. The war came to the city from its very first days. Through Tuapse, the evacuation of industrial enterprises and the population of the south of the USSR began. The city turned into a gigantic evacuation hospital, every day two or three motor ships came to Tuapse port with thousands of wounded on board. All hospitals, schools, health centers, kindergartens and pioneer camps have been converted to hospitals. From July 1941 to July 1942, the port received wounded soldiers and officers - 150 thousand, evacuated citizens - 120 thousand, 11 kindergartens and nurseries - 2100 children. Residents of the city were enrolled in air defense units and sanitary squads. Only in the first three days of the war 235 applications from volunteers were submitted to the city military enlistment office. Railwaymen and port workers switched to round-the-clock work. The men who went to the front were replaced by women. In October 1941, the construction of the Agoysky airfield began. And by May 1942, the legendary U-2 was rising from the site of the Agoysky airfield. A particularly difficult situation developed in the summer of 1942, when Sevastopol fell and the Tuapse port became the main port, the main naval base that fed the entire Black Sea group of troops. The main task of the German command is the battle for the Caucasus and its oil. In August 1942, one of the most significant operations began, which went down in history under the name “Tuapse Defensive Operation”. In bloody battles, the enemy was stopped at the approaches to the Main Caucasus Range. The city was subjected to fierce bombing and shelling, the Nazis sought to raze it to the ground. Fierce and bloody battles unfolded on the outskirts of the city, but the Nazi troops were stopped 23 km from Tuapse. 25 thousand German soldiers and officers died near Tuapse, our losses amounted to about 100 thousand people. For courage and perseverance shown by the working people during the Great Patriotic War, and for the successes achieved in economic and cultural construction, Tuapse was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 6, 1981.
