Samara is the administrative center of the Samara region. The seventh largest city after Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan. The population according to the 2010 data is 1.134 million people. Samara is located in the bend of Samara Luke, on the left elevated bank of the Volga River, between the mouths of the Sok River and the Samara River. From 1935 to 1991 the city was called Kuibyshev, after the surname of the Soviet state and party figure V.V. Kuibyshev. Monument to Maxim Gorky was installed in the Strukovsky Garden near the Maxim Gorky Drama Theater in Samara. A granite monument was made by the sculptor Igor Fedorov. On February 22, 1895, Gorky came to Samara. In this city he meets Ya. Teitel, S.P. Wanderer and E.P. Volzhina, who will become the wife of the writer. Maxim Gorky was actively published in the "Samara newspaper" under the pseudonym of Jehudiel Chlamyde
