Consulate General of Guyana

I went to the Consulate this morning to obtain a life certificate in order to file for my pension with NIS. Not knowing what to expect, especially since that office was closed during the Pandemic, I approached that location on 38th st with some unease. I saw what looked like a line in front of the building, actually two, with the second one looking a bit disorganized. After inquiring I was directed to the first one. I duly complied. After about one minute of uncertainty, a gentleman came out from the Consulate and began collecting completed forms. I told him why I was there, and he moved me wait with the second group. Very quickly, he handed me a blank life certificate form and asked that I complete it. About two minutes after, he returned and collected my completed form, along with my ID. He took both inside. Approximately 5 minutes after, a polite young lady came out with my life certificate. She then gave the best news ever. The completed certificate was mine to keep. They have already forwarded a copy directly to the NIS office in Guyana!! That blow my mind. It seemed that whatever happened after Covid, that office is showing a more humane approach. I do not know about anyone else, but I like the new and improved approach. Good for you, Guyana Consulate in NY. Keep this up!!

I called the consulate a few times for information, the staff was very professional and courteous. I also spoke with the Consul General, Barbara Atherly, who, not only from my experience but also family members who have had very good experiences in personal visits to the consulate. The Consul General is doing a great job, exercising her many professional talents; as a Guyanese and International professional with utmost integrity. It would be remiss of me not to say thank you to the staff of the Guyana Consulate to New York. I also received my follow up information expeditiously.Thank you Consul General and staff. Be safe during this pandemic.

I just read a review from Sohanie about applying for a passport over 6 weeks and still didn’t get it back. I applied for mine and they said 4-6 weeks and since I’m cutting it really close for a work travel I am very nervous that it might not get back in time. I’ve called numerous times, I even asked to have it expedite and they said they are not expediting. This is very nerve wrecking. Did ANYONE who recently applied received their passport within the given time?nReally would appreciate if anyone did.nnThank you!
