Zion Hill Cemetery is a beautiful 24 acre cemetery in the historic Frog Hill neighborhood. The grave sites span over 200 years. There are large sections within the cemetery that were purchased by Jewish fraternal organizations that are now defunct. Clearly, the City and the other owners of the cemetery could do a better job maintaining it, but with limited resources, those responsible have chosen the living over the dead. That said, this cemetery is well worth a visit. The Auerbach and Fox families and other prominent Hartford families have grand memorials. There are numerous specimen trees, a resident ground hog, beautiful vistas of the Hartford skyline and thousands of graves of both Christians and Jews. There are many Armenians buried at the north end of the cemetery along with Russians, Greeks, Italians, Irish and other immigrant groups that made Hartford a hub of innovation and manufacturing in the 19th and 20th centuries. I live nearby and often bring a bag to pick up litter when I visit. Afterwards, I like to stop at the cafe on the Trinity College campus cafe on the north side of the cemetery and pick up some fresh bagels or stop at El Mercado on Park Street for some Latin food. This cemetery is a CT treasure.

The City of Hartford should take better care of the grounds of the cemetery. They should be ashamed ... it’s horrendous with overgrown grass and broken branches. If I could post pictures I would! I’m disgusted seeing that it’s so messy. Some of my family members are buried there and you can hardly see the names of the graves.

they built a fence around the cemetery, because people are dying to get in
