This is the only thing left if the original settlements of Palmenthal and Harold. Settlements made by the Lutheran missionaries traveling to the Pacific coast from the Midwest. Local folklore says the travelers had been told they would know they were close to the ocean when they saw palm trees. Never actually having seen palm trees before, they mistook the local Joshua trees for palms and so named their settlement after them

Tomb stones on the cemetery's go back all the way to 1860. This is a Palmdale historical site.
