Besides being the only violin maker for miles around Michael Lyons is surely the most engaging violin maker ever; an old world craftsman in the middle of the woods telling tall tales on anything that comes to mind; a rural tinkerer with a Renaissance touch for Classical string instruments and fine collectibles. If you are fortunate enough to have Michael Lyons repair your most prized possession you will come away with some solid work, an inspiring moment, and a trusting relationship.
My teacher recommended Michael Lyons to me when she heard I was looking for a new cello. I bought a new cello here at a really good price! The price for a great quality cello is very affordable, especially sincenI am in 7th grade and am looking for a cello that will last me some years. I had a lot of fun in the shop. It's very warm and welcoming, which makes the shopping experience really enjoyable and memorable. Michael is very kind and helpful. His passion and hard work really shows in his instruments. He even let my sister play a couple Violas even though she was just accompanying me, not buying. You won't regret buying from him!
Very rarely do I write reviews on any platform; however, Mike's shop has caused me to make an exception!nnNot only was the quality of the instrument (an Oxford Cello) I purchased absolutely incredible, but Mike, himself, was an amazing person to speak with. He clearly knows his craft and is open to any questions you might have for him. He is very friendly and quick to respond via email.nnThe shop itself was easy to find, even visiting all the way from North-Central Massachusetts. Mike was even willing to contact me the night before and provide his phone number in the event that I got lost. Mike makes it very apparent that he values you as more than just another customer, as some other music shops have come across.nnMike puts no pressure on buying any particular instrument and is very understanding of those on a budget! I am excited to see him again, as we recently found a violin with a missing sound post. Given my experience of being able to visit, try out, and purchase this cello, I definitely know who I will be contacting about this violin!nn10/10
Exceptionally helpful, friendly and informative.
My original plan was to either rent or purchase a violin, however Mike evaluated my violin, discussed my options and rebuilt it within an hour, including new pegs, new sound post, new strings..... He saved me a lot of money! Mike is an honest, very skilled violin builder...I had a great experience and will happily drive from Cape Cod for his expertise!
