Saint Annes Cemetery

Very cool place....on PRIVATE property but we stumbled upon it & the owner was very nice & let us check it out and take pictures, and spent time telling us about the history not just of the cemetery and it’s inhabitants (many of whom he was related to) but also telling us stories about how the little town around the area like Gulfcrest, etc., used to be railroad stops on the way to Mobile, and how important the railroads were back in the day, because you couldn’t just run up to Walmart for some potatoes and beans...you had to either get things along the way at the little railroad stops or pick things up in town in Mobile, and you had to get enough supply to last for months at a time. He said that once automobiles became popular and more roads were built (especially the interstate), that passenger trains weren’t really needed or used anymore, so a lot of these little towns kind of “dried up”, and lost much of their revenue and then their population. In the meantime, many tiny family cemeteries were left behind, often on large private family plots with a lot of acreage, and many of them may not even be known about or registered as a result.
