Spectacularly beautiful views of the harbor. Wonderful ambience and impeccable service. Unfortunately,the food was mediocre. The lobster bisque tasted bland, more like squash puree with a dollop of lobster. The main course needed seasoning.

If you are looking for an upscale dining experience in Bar Harbor, this is the place you want to make your reservation. You get a wonderful view of the water from nearly every table in the reading room and there was live piano music during our dinner. All of our food was flawlessly prepared and even the complimentary appetizer bites were delicious! The staff was extremely professional and the whole experience was excellent.

Loved the service. They actually talk to you which is not common. Food was all good quality albeit a little basic for fine dining. The view and live piano made for a nice experience. The wine prices were surprisingly reasonable. All the good here warrants five stars.

We were in Bar Harbor on our honeymoon, after we were unable to go to France due to Covid. We let the restaurant know that this was a very special occasion for us. Yet when we arrived for our reserved table. We asked to be moved, as we didn't like the table placement. They said no other tables could accommodate us, okay, they're a busy place... Then, 20 minutes after being seated with zero service, they finally took our drink order. (This was a management problem, not the fault of the waiter.) The apps were okay. But when we did receive our entrees, the food was sub par. I rate the food average to below average.nnThe Reading Room has a wonderful historical tradition and an amazing view. But the management/owners allow this to subsidize their clear lack of a commitment to great service and great food.
