We spent about an hour walking around the Gates of prayer Jewish cemetery on canal street. The cemetery dates back to 1850 and most stones date late 1800s to early 1900s.nnThe names, dates and places written on these stones make up interesting stories, especially if you are interested in Jewish-American history.nnSome of the stones are in very good condition, some are broken and fallen. The main entrance features an old stone that was used as a way finding index when the cemetery was still small enough, very interesting find.
It’s a lot better maintained than other cemeteries in NOLA. Why to the gates have on top “Society of Psalms” in Hebrew (Chevra T’hillot)? And why does the name in Hebrew Sha’arei Tefillim (Gates of Prayer) appear on the gate of the cemetery on Joseph Street about two blocks riverside from St. Charles Avenue?
