This was the site where the Alaska Earthquake of 1964 caused a huge tidal wave which swept away the local one-room rural school house, taking the lives of the teacher and her students. A memorial commentates the spot and the lives that were lost. You can see a posted display that shows the history of that event and what it was like before the tidal wave devastated Laupahoehoe Point. Of course, it is located in the Laupahoehoe Beach Park, so there are picnic tables, a pavillion, and camping sites (permits needed) in one of the most scenic posts anywhere on the Big Island.
