I truly enjoyed my visit to this very old cemetery. It was set aside by the white people who wanted their house people and slaves to have a nice place to rest in peace. It is also for any Jewish person who died in Macon as they were not allowed at Rosehill
I went to the Old City Cemetery as a site visit for my history class. I expected to be able to learn from the tombstones and the layout of the cemetery, but the tombstones are very worn, most are broken, and the text on almost every tombstone is unreadable because the stone has faded so much. It is interesting to see that Macon has so much history, and that there still exists a cemetery from a time before the civil war.nI definitely recommend a short visit to anyone that cares about Macon history or has an interest in burial practices, but do not recommend this as a tourist attraction.nThe cemetery is also very south of downtown in a remote area. I don't recommend going alone.
It's long forgotten by most folks in Macon, but this is the cemetery that pre-dates Rosehill. It's hidden in the industrial district, and in poor repair, but worth visiting just to see how things used to be. The arches and some of the headstones are still in good repair, but much of the cemetery will remind you of why we need to preserve the history we can.nnDo be careful going alone or in the evenings; it's not unusual to encounter the homeless making camp here.
I visited the Old City Cemetery this evening looking for a specific grave. As I approached, the arched granite entrance was almost awe inspiring. That feeling quickly abated as I reached the top of the steps and laid eyes on the pitiful site before me. The Old City Cemetery is in terrible shape. Estimated to be nearly 700 interments on these 4 acres of ground, only a handful of markers remain. My heart sank as I walked around trying to find and read the markers. It is such a shame that Macon's City Cemetery has been allowed to deteriorate and fall into such condition. That the city of Macon would allow the cemetery to be desecrated as it has been is a blemish on this city's proud history.
Coca Cola founder john pemberton is here.
