One of the lesser know of the National Cemeteries near Richmond, VA, this spot is a quiet and respectful tribute to the men that fought and died for their nation.

Private Peter Goldsmith, born 1833 in Cragsmoor, NY. Died Aug 15, 1864 in battle of Deep Bottom (Aug 14-18). Enlisted age 30 (lied and said 21) on Dec 24 1863, private Company G, 4th Regiment Heavy Artillery of NY Volunteers assigned to Army of the Potomac, 6th Army Corp. One of four brothers who fought for the Union, two deceased, two disabled.nnBuried in Section B, Site 32, Fort Harrison National Cemetery, Richmond, VA. Likely buried on the field of battle on Aug 15, 1864 in the Battle of Deep Bottom, VA then moved in 1873 when the US Government re-buried in national cemeteries as many soldiers as it could identify.nn(Note to readers: I have never been to my ancestor’s grave, if you make it, please do share a photo here.)

Take some time to appreciate those who served for freedom. Many in this cemetery are from a colored troop (CT) that stormed the fort. There a Medal of Honor recipient buried here. Simple and elegant place to show respect.
